Apartments in a special gracious palazzo, just minutes from the Salento’s beautiful coast and not far from Otranto. Palazzo Guglielmo’s has a hip but totally unpretentious atmosphere.

Just minutes by car (about 3km) from some of Puglia’s most beautiful coastline, Palazzo Guglielmo is a special B&B, with apartments, set in one of the Salento’s unspoilt and undiscovered little towns. About 15km from Otranto, 45km from Lecce and 95km from the nearest airport, and less than an hour’s drive from Gallipoli, Vignacastrisi is quite sleepy, with a bar and a couple of small shops, so you soon get to know the locals. In the main piazza and opposite the church, Palazzo Guglielmo is hardly noticeable. A huge doorway barely hints at the oasis inside.

Once through its massive ancient doors, you enter a hidden world of beauty, with the cool and tranquil central courtyard, a glimpse of pretty gardens beyond, mellow stone walls and paving, and the imposing 17th century palazzo. Secret stone paths weave through flowerbeds, secular palms and pine trees, to the citrus grove and charming swimming pool. Areas to relax abound, on sunny terraces, or under the shade of trees. The rooftop terrace is particularly comfortable, with sumptuous sofas and even a hot tub – the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine on those balmy Southern Italian evenings, to watch the sun set.

With only tenrooms and two apartments, Palazzo Guglielmo feels very exclusive and it is quite a luxury to have so much space, inside and outside, for so few guests. On the first floor, the small library and reading room, sitting room and bar are a peaceful retreat after a day’s touring or sunbathing. On the ground floor, and spilling onto a charming terrace, which overlooks the pool, is the bright and airy stone-vaulted breakfast room and comfortable lounge. Guests can relax on the comfy sofas to read newspapers or listen to music. It is here, too, that they will be absolutely spoiled at breakfast and dinner time (served most evenings) by Cristina & Paola, who produce home-made jams, delicacies, cakes and pastries to die for – forget your diets here! Fresh orange juice, squeezed from their own oranges, which were picked just moments before (when in season), is pretty spectacular, too. Ensuring that all runs smoothly is the charming Mauro – Palazzo Guglielmo’s “Mr. Fix-it” he has worked his charms on many of our clients, who tell us that nothing is too much trouble for him and that he has the patience of Job. We agree.

Palazzo Guglielmo’s two apartments are rather quirky, spacious, homely and comfortable. One, on the top floor of the palazzo, has an impressively huge kitchen. The other, just a stroll through the lovely gardens, with its own private courtyard, feels quite independent. Both have three bedrooms.

Self-catering you may be, but the breakfast included sets the day off to a perfect start. Stroll through the tranquil courtyard or the pretty garden, to savour Cristina’s wonderful breakfast delights. Then, relax on sunny terraces, under the shade of trees, or by the lovely pool, or on the roof, with its sumptuous sofas and hot tub. Decisions, decisions!

We love the unhurried ambience and warm welcome of Palazzo Guglielmo. In the middle of things, yet tranquil, beautiful and gracious, it will feel as if you are visiting friends in their rather grand private palazzo. It is a secret jewel of the Salento.

Breakfast is included.

Casa Margherita (three bedrooms, sleeps 5)
Independent from the main palazzo, just a stroll through the gardens, a little wicket gate and stone path lead to Casa Margherita’s pretty, jasmine-scented, private furnished courtyard. A particularly spacious apartment, a door leads into a large, very characterful and absolutely charming kitchen, with a run of units, sofa and a massive tree trunk of a table. The huge sitting room feels very homely, with lots of sofas and comfy chairs, and double doors into the courtyard. There is also a small loo and shower room on the ground floor. A spiral staircase in the sitting room takes you to the first floor, where there is a double bedroom with an antique metal bed, a small single room, with door to outside roof terrace, a second “rather orange” double room and a shower room. Once the owner’s mother’s apartment, its taste is pretty quirky, but very homely and comfortable.
Suite Sonia (three bedrooms, sleeps 5/6)
On the top floor of Palazzo Guglielmo, this apartment used to be the owner’s own apartment. Very spacious, you enter into the living room (for want of a better word!), which is really quite eccentric, with an enormous antique day bed and a piano. Off this is the massive kitchen, which is very simple and unfitted, but impressively huge. A corridor leads to one double bedroom with en-suite shower room, a second double bedroom, a third double/twin bedroom and the main shower room. A mixture of ethnic, simple white and antique, this apartment could certainly be described as eclectic!
As the access to Suite Sonia is up the same stairs as Palazzo Guglielmo’s roof terrace, this is also the nearest terrace for guests of the apartment.
