Contemporary & quality, stupendous uninterrupted sea views, impressive. Michael loves Monte Tauro’s incredible building, the amazing views & the fabulous breakfast.

Ingeniously, built into the cliff face, and with uninterrupted views of the sea, Monte Tauro’s location is really spectacular. Its organic form seems to hang from the cliff, and the terraces echo its contours and the curves of the coast below. Only the corridors are at the back, so that rooms profit from the views.

Young designers have given the Monte Tauro a young, vibrant touch and a contemporary style, with every detail being considered, right down to the espresso cups. A clever use of glass creates light and the interior, with natural colours and wood, has a very bright feel. The elegant reception area, with modern furnishings, is different and stylish. The beautiful bar is adorned with lovely paintings. The stunning pool, with its unusual mosaic sun terraces, seems to hang in mid-air. The Grillbar, close by, serves delicious light lunches and snacks. The à la carte restaurant serves excellent Sicilian and Mediterranean cuisine and a superb breakfast.

The Monte Tauro bedrooms all have sea-views, and are comfortable and light, with very modern bathrooms. Each room has a terrace or balcony, with an attractive slatted wooden deck, giving a nautical feel.

Close to Taormina’s centre, approximately 400m from its main shopping street, the Monte Tauro is approached down a very steep driveway. A bit of a bare-knuckle ride, the hotel will park your car (or deliver it to the top). Then just stroll into town.

Will the lovely Hotel Monte Tauro appeal to everyone? It has appealed hugely to mixed generations of the Long Travel Team (even us wrinklies!) and it is difficult to imagine anyone, who would not be equally impressed.

TAORMINA

In a stunning location, hundreds of feet above the sparkling blue sea, Mount Etna dominating the backdrop, Taormina is a place to sit and absorb the atmosphere, a good excuse to dress up, have a typical Italian passeggiata and do some classy shopping – all the ingredients of a perfect holiday destination. With its Greco-Roman theatre and mediaeval centre, it attracts a truly cosmopolitan mix – fascinating, sophisticated, fashionable and chic. Internationally famous for its film festival and concerts, you could easily be rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. A short cable-car ride to the beaches of Mazzaro to soak up the sun, then finish the day in one of the many excellent eating places for some delicious Sicilian food and wine. Taormina is also a good base for exploring Sicily, with a hire car, or with daily-organised tours. Local transport is good, too.

Review

“Wonderful hotel, friendly staff, lovely room. Very good breakfast too. ” Yvonne & David, Barnet

“The hotel was perfect and I don’t think we could fault anything at all. Etna, the Greek theatre, Taormina itself an especially the Monte Tauro were all perfect. The USP of the hotel was that it was a totter into town for shops, restaurants and sights (including the many brides parading up and down of an evening!) and yet once inside the hotel it was absolutely quiet and calm with that unbroken view of the sea. What a find. ” Alexia & Michael, Banbury
Stephen Emms wrote for Gay Times describing Hotel Monte Tauro as “a clifftop hideaway…..one of the most glamorous options (in Taormina), whose glass elevator will whisk you, with vertiginous views across the bay, down to room, restaurant or pool. “

Rooms

The Monte Tauro bedrooms all have sea-views, and are comfortable and light, with very modern bathrooms. Each room has a terrace or balcony, with an attractive slatted wooden deck, giving a nautical feel.

Standard Rooms are, generally, those just above the pool and have showers and smaller balconies (still big enough to sit out on).

Classic Rooms (formerly known as Superior rooms) are slightly larger, with bath/shower, and terrace.

Junior Suites are special, with almost a double bathroom, with jacuzzi bath, in one part, and a large shower, in the other. Also, the bathroom has a large window (and blind!), with a view, through the bedroom, to the outside, from your bath! Junior suites are spacious, with a sitting area, walk-in wardrobe, and roomy terrace – well worth stretching the budget for!
