Boutique, organic agriturismo, fashionably rustic chic, and magical – guests never want to leave. An extraordinary slice of rural life, Masseria Montenapoleone has its heart in nostalgia and its feet very much in the demands of modern day hospitality.

Only about five minutes, by car, from some of Puglia’s most lovely sandy beaches, Masseria Montenapoleone hides itself behind a majestically proportioned gateway, in an unrivalled rural location. The long driveway track, lined with trees and shrubs, has olive trees on both sides, as far as the eye can see. At the end is the magnificently imposing, gleaming white masseria, with its highlights of pinky-terracotta and grey, and a strip of bright blue sea, on the horizon. You immediately know that you have arrived in a special and unique place.

Supremely private, set in acres of its own organic farmland, Masseria Montenapoleone’s terraces and pathways are as nature intended, hewn out of the rock and uneven, at times. The beautiful, lush gardens teem with caper plants, fruit trees, hedges of huge prickly pears, walls of upside-down ones, striking bougainvillea, oleander and so many native plants. There is an ancient walled orangerie with the original stone irrigation channels and so much outside space for only fifteen rooms that guests are spoiled.

The glorious pool is on an elevated terrace, with views towards the sea on one side, and towards the famous Murgia ridge on the other. Shelving gently, the pool, also with a whirlpool part, is surrounded by gazebos and daybeds. The whole scene is a dream.

Masseria Montenapoleone is unique. A typical example of a Pugliese masseria, the owners’ intention has always been to keep it as original as possible, so it is not over-renovated and modern demands are catered for very cleverly. Its chic rustic style is so refreshingly opposite to the ubiquitous modern minimalism, with straight lines and not a thing out of place. It has huge personality, with something to make you smile in every corner. Literally full of interesting bits and pieces, the owners’ passion for local crafts and ancient agricultural traditions has woven a complex and sublimely successful tapestry of treen, old typewriters, sewing machines, birdcages, shoe lasts, lamps made from watering cans or coffee pots or waffle irons. It is “busy” and absolutely eclectic, but it really works. You will be transported to a secret and fascinating world. You will marvel at the rustic ephemera and objets d’art and smile at the ingenious and quirky uses invented for everyday things. Being surrounded by such things oozes a kind of nostalgic comfort and you will not want to leave.

Masseria Montenapoleone bedrooms and suites are, needless to say, very different from one another. All are charming and comfortable, with stone or traditionally tiled floors and delightful shower rooms. Many have antique or unusual beds and their own terrace and all display that individual, country chic, slightly eccentric, and very tasteful style, which you will find nowhere else.

The original cavern-like stables were cut out of the rock, and they are now the incredible breakfast room and small lounge area, which also extends into the lovely terrace, with star vaulting, stone floors and huge glass doors. Breakfasts are a treat, with all sorts of local delicacies, jams, fruit picked from the garden and home-made goodies. Nearby, is the ever-popular barbecue and country kitchen for guests, fully equipped to enjoy making your own light meals or snacks. You will be welcome to pick seasonal fruit and vegetables – all organic, of course – and you will feel quite at home, which is Masseria Montenapoleone’s intention.

Near the pool is the large glazed restaurant/dining room, where lunch and dinner are served, when available, and where cookery lessons can often be observed creating hilarity (as well as good food, of course). Book to join in, if you can – they are great fun. Although, a boutique B&B, lunches and dinners are certainly not to be missed either, so book them, when you have the chance. The soft sofas to sink into, on the terrace outside, are perfect for a relaxing drink, before or after dinner.

Last, but not least, it is also the personalities, which make Masseria Montenapoleone. The owner’s son, Giuliano, seems to devote his entire time to the masseria and his guests. He is so consumed with passion for it that it is quite infectious. His staff are no less attentive and smiling. Doriana is especially sweet (as a Salsa teacher, we are trying to get her to teach Salsa under the stars – “Strictly” Sotto Le Stelle – what do you think?). Look out for Napoleone, the cat and The Dog With No Name, too.

Staying at Masseria Montenapoleone is a magical experience like no other. As they say themselves, it lies “somewhere between magic and forgotten”. We agree. We love it and never want to leave.

Review

“We have just returned from the Masseria Montenapoleone. We can honestly say it is the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in. The rooms are like honeymoon suites and the dinner we had was superb as was the antipasti at lunchtime. Well done everyone involved and a great recommendation.”
Sophie & Ralph, Banbury.

“It exceeded our expectations with its rustic charm and proximity to some of the best beaches we’ve ever seen. I would never have chosen it, so thanks for steering us towards it & giving us one of our best holidays ever”  Jack & Susie, Pershore

Rooms

Masseria Montenapoleone bedrooms and suites are, needless to say, very different from one another, so fairly impossible to describe! All are charming and comfortable, with stone or traditionally tiled floors and delightful shower rooms. Many have antique or unusual beds and their own terrace and all display that individual, country chic, slightly eccentric, and very tasteful style, which you will find nowhere else.

RUSTIC ROOM
We really like these en-suite bedrooms very much. They vary in size, but all are delightful, with a terrace or garden, overlooking the grounds or open countryside.

JUNIOR SUITE
On the ground floor, en-suite bedrooms and sitting areas, overlooking the grounds or open countryside. These can accommodate up to three/four persons, on request. These are good for families or couples needing extra inside space.

SUPERIOR SUITE
Three of these have a small sitting area as well as the en-suite bedroom and a limited view of the sea, in the distance. One has a private garden, overlooking the grounds. One is smaller than the others, without a sitting area, but can sleep up to three persons. The other three are more spacious and can accommodate up to three/four/five persons, on request. These are great for families or couples needing extra inside space.

ROMANTIC SUITE
This is the cave suite and is very special. Particularly romantic, Masseria Montenapoleone describes it as “ an alcove of love and seclusion within the masseria”. Say no more!
