On the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula, La Sorrentina is a group of agritourist apartments, near the beach, and with a typical homely restaurant. With a real sense of community, it is quirky and laid-back, clients never want to leave.

Only about 15km from Sorrento, Nerano is a delightful fishing village-cum-small resort. The road winds down through Nerano to the beach of Marina Del Cantone, at the bottom. There and in the village itself, you will find some interesting bars and restaurants, including one with two Michelin stars, called Quattro Passi. The chef, Antonio Mellino, is a character and a real magician with ingredients. He opened another Quattro Passi in London recently, so you could even sample the cuisine before you go – what a good excuse for a great Italian meal! Apart from the “fine dining” options, there are others, which are traditional and equally delicious, not least of which is La Sorrentina’s own trattoria, which consistently gathers accolades.

If you love nature, walking, swimming and beautiful beaches, this part of the Sorrento Peninsula is certainly for you. A protected marine park, the coast boasts some of the most beautiful beaches of the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Peninsula. Either take your car (approximately 3 minutes) to the car park near Marina Del Cantone’s charming pebbly beach or do the 15-minute walk down (20 minutes back up!!) from La Sorrentina to the same beach at the bottom. As well as having serviced lido areas, it has a real local feel, as families spread themselves out on towels and an array of deckchairs on the free part of the beach. The atmosphere always seems friendly and low-key and the restaurants, which overhang the beach with their terraces, offer really good, unpretentious and not extortionately priced fare. Don’t be surprised if you see celebs like Bill Gates or Elton John, who are known to pop across from Capri to enjoy a meal. The sea is usually crystal clear and startlingly turquoise blue. You can usually hire boats or book a ride on one of the trips, which take you to fabulous beaches, close by, which can only be reached by sea, or to Capri, which can be reached in less than half an hour. There are also some footpaths to other stunning coves, which are well worth the effort of discovering. All in all, this is a slice of paradise.

La Sorrentina, with its striking sunny yellow walls, original exposed stone and marine blue paintwork, fits into this pretty picture perfectly. When you first approach La Sorrentina, climbing steps through an intriguing and attractive tumble of grassy terraces, lemon groves and flower-filled gardens, you have to look up to see the centuries old house, at the top, sittingjust in front of the lovely church. Turn around and, with the house at your back, you will have your breath taken away by the amazing sea views. It is a stunning spot.

It is the four apartments inLa Sorrentina’s main house, which we like best. Actually, they are homely, even slightly old-fashioned, but very comfortable, pretty spacious and well cared for, with good, functional well-equipped kitchens and shower rooms. We particularly like the quirkiness of this ancient house. Due to the charmingly higgledy-piggledy nature of the terraces, you can feel that you are several storeys up, but are actually at ground level on one side. There seem to be little courtyards and secret windows onto the stunning views around every corner. Bedooms inside the apartments often run directly from one to another, too.

The pool sits on a lower terrace and is a delight. There are so many terraces on so many different levels that there is lots of space for guests to relax and we love the relaxed atmosphere of community. There are few house rules here – you are meant to feel at home and use the spaces as you most enjoy. You might find wine-tasting on one terrace one day or aperitivi being served the next. The wonderfully welcoming Guglielmo and his staff brim with ideas and seem always to come up with something to interest their guests. One thing is for certain – from almost any terrace, you will have absolutely stunning views of one of the best bits of coast in the world.

The trattoria is a tasty treat and far too convenient for your own good. Using ingredients from La Sorrentina’s own organic garden and local trusted suppliers, you will love the tasty, wholesome, typically Italian cuisine. This is what we go to Italy for and you won’t be disappointed. The food is irresistible, so be warned……..diet when you get home!

What else can we say about La Sorrentina? It is certainly no designer destination, but it has everything to make a really memorable holiday. In fact, you will probably not want to leave – we didn’t.

THE SORRENTO PENINSULA & MASSA LUBRENSE
We love this undiscovered area. What a shame that many visitors head straight for the Amalfi Coast and miss this spectacularly beautiful peninsula. A more tranquil option than Sorrento or the Amalfi, it is a good base for visiting both, and it is also noteworthy, in its own right.

The views are amazing. In places, Capri looks so close that you could swim to it (but don’t try it!). Quaint villages and picturesque harbours, coves and beaches are dotted along the coast, which is also part of an important marine reserve.

For nature-lovers, walkers and those who love to be off the beaten track, there are over 100km of marked trails, an intricate network of paths, mule tracks, lanes (and roads, in places), which often link small villages and hamlets. These walks will take you through terraces of lemon & olive groves, copses of chestnut & oak and beautiful typically Mediterranean vegetation – broom, myrtle, juniper, rosemary & agave. Sea & mountains merge, giving spectacular panoramas of cliffs dropping steeply to the sea, Saracen towers & magnificent views of the coast.

What a stunning part of the world

Review

The location is gorgeous, with fabulous views across the Bay of Salerno, and a quick, albeit steep, walk down to the little Marina del Cantone beach. Sorrento and Capri, and a number of interesting smaller villages such as Termini and beaches such as Mitigliano are within easy striking distance. And of course Naples and Ischia, which are ferry rides away from Sorrento. And yet the village of Nerano, where the Casale is, is quiet quiet quiet. It’s hard to imagine a better location. – Trusted Customer

The situation of this beautiful villa is excellent for visiting the city of Sorrento and the isle of Capri and the Amalfi coast. The service is excellent, the staff exceptionally accomodating. The gardens are beautifully kept and it is a perfect place just to come to rest.  – Stella, Gloucestshire

A Spectacular and characteful collection of apartments. It was once a palazzo (palace) with amazing sea views from most of the rooms and lots of outside terraces to enjoy and a restaurant with a 10 mins walk to the beach. A couple of michelin star restaurants are also at walking distance which is super handy. – Keeley & Theo, Leeds

Rooms

It is the four apartments in La Sorrentina’s main house, which we like best. Actually, they are homely, even slightly old-fashioned, but very comfortable, pretty spacious and well cared for, with good, functional well-equipped kitchens and shower rooms and air-conditioning (payable locally).

We particularly like the quirkiness of this ancient house. Due to the charmingly higgledy-piggledy nature of the terraces, you can feel that you are several storeys up, but are actually at ground level on one side. There seem to be little courtyards and secret windows onto the stunning views around every corner. Bedrooms inside the apartments often run directly from one to another, too.

Apartment A – one bedroom; one shower room (sleeps up to 4)
Open-plan kitchen/sitting room, with table & chairs for 4 & double sofa-bed. The kitchen is equipped with fridge/freezer, four-ring hob & oven. Off the kitchen is a small terrace with table & chairs for 2 & sea-view. Also off the kitchen is a sliding door to the shower room. The double bedroom is spacious and has a “secret door” – usually kept locked, unless guests request otherwise – into the church courtyard.

Apartment B – two bedrooms; one shower room (sleeps up to 4)
The charming wisteria-clad terrace, with table & 6 chairs, just outside this apartment is, in theory, a communal area. However, effectively, the terrace is mostly used by guests of this apartment. You enter the apartment into the kitchen/dining room, with table & chairs for 4. The kitchen is equipped with fridge/freezer, four-ring hob & oven. Off the kitchen is the shower room. The double bedroom is spacious and has full-length French doors, which open onto a wonderful sea-view. There is access off the double bedroom to a small room, with a single bed and a sofa-bed (and little else in the way of furniture). This room may not be great for adults, but is ideal for children.

Apartment C – two bedrooms; two shower rooms (sleeps up to 6)
At the top of the house, you enter the apartment into the spacious, open-plan kitchen/dining/sitting room, with table & chairs for 4/6 and two sofas, one of which is a sofa-bed. The kitchen is equipped with fridge/freezer, four-ring hob & oven. Access from the sitting room area leads to a twin/double bedroom, with possibility of extra bed & en-suite shower room. Access off this twin room leads to the double bedroom, which has a spacious en-suite with bath & separate shower. There is also a delightful terrace off this double bedroom, with table and chairs for 6 and the most wonderful panorama of the sea.

Apartment D – two bedrooms; one shower room (sleeps up to 5)
Next to Apartment B, you enter the apartment into the spacious kitchen/dining room, with table & seating for 5. The kitchen is equipped with fridge/freezer, four-ring hob & oven. A corridor off the kitchen leads to the shower room and the twin/double bedroom, with possibility of extra bed. Off this bedroom is the large master double bedroom with sofa. Outside the kitchen is the apartment’s own terrace, with access from and overlooking the garden, with table & chairs.

Please note that the extra beds possible might be sofa-beds, daybeds or roll-out bed
