Boutique B&B. Fellini-like mediaeval town, which seems suspended in time above the sea. This “film set” is real and very special. If ever there were a place to enchant your soul, this is it. Marulivo and Pisciotta are a dream.

In theory, the Cilento coast road should go directly south, along the coast, towards Pisciotta. However, a landslip closed the road a couple of years ago and it is taking some very Southern Italian time to repair!! This doesn’t matter a jot, coming from the south, or from the airport at Naples. If a stay at Marulivo is part of an itinerary, exploring The Cilento, you would probably expect to potter your way south, taking the road, which twists and turns along the coast, and that you can do until about halfway between Marina Di Casalvelino and Pisciotta. Then, a diversion takes you inland, through a lush landscape, winding between hills, to arrive south of the wonderful mediaeval Pisciotta. It probably adds a good half hour to the route, no more. In fact, less than an hour from South Campania’s most southerly town, Sapri, and only an hour and a half from Maratea, it is perfect for including in not only in a Cilento itinerary, but also in one, which crosses boundaries into Basilicata.

If you love beaches and amazing coastal landscape, this part of the Cilento Coast is magnificent. The stunning Cape of Palinuro is just 12km away and has some of Italy’s most spectacular coastline, with sheer cliffs, little coves and a crystal clear azure sea. On clear days, you can see Calabria. The famous, secluded small beach of Buondormire and some other secret coves can only easily be reached by boat and this can usually be organised from Palinuro’s harbour. The partly pebbly, partly sandy beach at Marina di Pisciotta can be reached from the town via a steep footpath of about 1km, or by road (approximately 3km). The wide, sandy beach at Caprioli, a few kilometres further on, stretches almost as far as Palinuro. 5km of sand and pristine sea are fabulous for a day at the seaside.

Traffic-free, the town of Pisciotta, a truly authentic slice of Italian life, hovers way above the sea. We think one of the most picturesque and atmospheric towns in Italy, let alone in The Cilento, it feels like an old Fellini film. Old men sit around in the square. Families passeggiata, children playing with absolute freedom, while Mammas and Papas stop off for a morning espresso or evening aperitivo. Lively and colourful weekly markets are everything we dream of – local farmers and their wives with their own traditionally produced cheeses and meats, the freshest of seasonal vegetables, knick-knacks, tea-towels and everything under the sun. Pisciotta is no museum though. It has all the right contemporary ingredients – nice bars, good restaurants, cute shops. Narrow alleyways and cobbled lanes lead up or down and away from the square, hiding in their midst bars and restaurants – we ate one of the best meals we have ever eaten in one of them.

If you arrive tired, as we did, climbing steps to a 14th century monastery, where every room is different and often not huge, you could be forgiven for feeling unsure. Clearly, the smiling face, which arrives on nimble legs to help with your luggage, is well used to the exercise! But, stay calm…your choice could not be better. Marulivo is so very special and unique and worth every ounce of energy spent to arrive.

An almost secret archway leads into a small and pretty courtyard, where the Marulivo’s thick walls of exposed stone tower upwards to the square of blue sky above. A joy of higgledy-piggledy stairways and twisting corridors lead to the rooms and to the spectacular roof terrace, at the very top. Enchanting, it is where guests usually take breakfast and relax throughout the day, enjoying one of the best panoramas that The Cilento has to offer. The extraordinary blue, blue views of the sea, way below, and the vast expanse of sky, which meets it on the horizon, are breathtaking and absolutely unforgettable.

Breakfasts are also worthy of a special mention. They have a touch of delicacy and elegance about them, with breads and pastries delivered to your table in your own basket, yoghurts individually made with added hazelnuts and chopped fruit and all sorts of other tempting delights. For our clients, who know and love the marvellous Hotel Villa Cheta in Maratea as much as we do, the delicacy of the breakfast reminded us of being there and we couldn’t help thinking what a marvellous combination both hotels would be for a holiday and only an hour and a half apart.

Actually, the resemblance to our beloved Villa Cheta continues in the bedrooms. A sort of mini Villa Cheta in a way, Marulivo has the same elegance and attention to detail with the crisp bed linens and a similar style for some of the furniture, on a slightly simpler scale to match the fact that there are only eleven rooms. Earthy colours, terracotta tiles, antique beds and exposed stone walls keep reminding you that you are in a building steeped in history. Wonderful hosts Lea, who is an architect, and her husband, Massimo, have struck exactly the right balance between modern standards and gracious antiquity. Some rooms are not huge, but all are absolutely charming. Some have a standing French balcony. Others have large windows. Superior Rooms and Junior Suites are the rooms with direct sea-view and we would always recommend that you choose one of these. That view is well worth those extra few centesimi!!

You will be thoroughly enchanted by Pisciotta and the lovely Hotel Marulivo. When you bid farewell to the delightfully kind owners, you will be leaving with sadness, but that’s OK – go back! We can’t wait.

Review

Staying in this apartment is wonderful – you get a taste of village life and, if you so wish, you can still take breakfast in the hotel, enjoy sundowner drinks on the fantastic terrace of the Marulivo as well as benefit from the the friendly hospitality that Lea and Massimo have come to be known for. – Trusted Customer

The stairs are a killer but well worth it!! – Madelaine, London

In our opinion, the Marulivo is probably the nicest hotel along the Cilento coast. What a great experience! We look forward to returning to this unexpected, peaceful, relaxing and beautiful slice of Southern Italian heaven!!!! – Ernes, Chichester
