Hard to find a better location than this, extensive grounds touch one of the most beautiful stretches of Sicilian coastline and give direct access to the beach. Designed as much for outside as inside living, the characterful property can be booked all together, or, in lower seasons, with one part locked off for smaller groups. A fabulous spot.

In Sicily’s south east corner, between Pozzallo and Porto Ulisse, there is 15km of some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, with fine golden sand and warm, absolutely pristine, transparent sea. Said to be “the bluest beaches of Italy”, it is no wonder that so much of this coast has been awarded with the Blue Flag accolade for its cleanliness and sheer natural beauty. It is really wonderful. With so much beach, finding your spot, even in high season is not usually a problem, either on the free areas or in lidos. Of course, August and Ferragosto is much more busy and lively, but there are many summer periods, when you might have the beaches almost to yourselves.

Pozzallo itself is typical of a seaside town-cum-port-cum-resort, the historic centre of which has now been rather overpowered by the more modern development around it. It is worthy of a visit or two, nevertheless. The beach is splendid, backed by the interesting old part and Torre Cabrera, a 15th century watchtower. There is a long promenade, a myriad of bars and restaurants, some great shops, and it is a perfect spot to watch the sun slowly sink into some of the most glorious sunsets you will ever see – preferably with a glass in hand! If you are really adventurous, you could even pop over to Malta. High-speed ferries from Pozzallo can get you there in an hour and a half.

Heading east of Pozzallo, the road will take you along the coast, past sandy beaches separated from the road by dunes, rarely glimpsing the crystalline waters hidden behind them. The whole of this area is really where the locals go to the beach and bars, restaurants and little shops are strung out along the coast road. Santa Maria del Foccallo is a residential area, just over 7km from Pozzallo and about 23km from the quaint and picturesque hamlet of Marzamemi, in the other direction. Marzamemi is a “must visit” for any holiday in this area. Its pretty Arab-influenced baglio has been transformed into a delightful courtyard of intriguing little shops, bars and restaurants and it is well worth sampling the cuisine.

Almost 8km further along the coast road from Santa Maria del Foccallo, you reach the stunning bay and coves around Porto Ulisse. A well-kept secret, off the main coast road, it is somewhat hidden away – a real jewel. Marzamemi is only about 16km from here. The wild and beautiful Vendicari Nature Reserve is about 20km. There you will discover idyllic deserted beaches and a striking pink spectacle of thousands of flamingos. Also nearby, is Portopalo di Capopassero, with a tropical white sandy beach and a tiny island just off shore. This is Italy’s southernmost tip, where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Ionian.

Well away from the coast road and with nothing more than a sandy track between it and one of the pretty coves around Porto Ulisse, Francesco Villa Blu is in something of a secret corner of the south east coast of Sicily, just about the southernmost tip of the island. Dunes, golden sands, a promontory with low white cliffs, blue pristine sea, a Blue Flag quality coastline, unspoiled and spectacular – in fact, everything you might imagine of a Mediterranean slice of heaven. This is what you step out onto when you go through the gate from the extensive grounds. Then, life becomes complicated – go left and you are on one little cove; go right and you soon arrive at another idyllic stretch of sand and turquoise blue sea. Decisions, decisions!

Francesco Villa Blu’s almost 2 acres of grounds have an attractive naturalness about them, befitting the beautiful natural surroundings outside the gates. Actually, Francesco, who is a precise sort of guy, has asked the owner to “manicure” the grounds, but we rather like them as they are, so hope that he doesn’t convince them! There are various varieties of palms, mature olive trees, oleander, cicas, figs and fruit trees – a typical Mediterranean mix. Guests are really spoiled with so much privacy and space – perfect for youngsters and the young at heart to run around to their hearts’ content.

Conceived as a single villa, but always with flexibility in mind, Francesco Villa Blu is made up of three independent units in one villa. Units A & B have a connecting door and form the main villa, with two bedrooms, whilst Unit C has a separate entrance. In total there are three bedrooms (2 doubles, 1 twin), three shower rooms and three kitchens (1 inside, 2 outside on covered terraces), plus the option of a sofa-bed in the living room.

Under wooden beamed ceilings, the rustic style of furnishings offer comfort, and the three shower rooms are of good modern standards. The main kitchen is well equipped, with 4-ring hob, oven, microwave, fridge-freezer and dishwasher, while the two outdoor kitchens and barbecue are a real boon in the summer months.

For bookings of up to 6 people, it is possible to just use units A and B. Unit A consists of a large living room, complete with sofa bed, en-suite shower room and the well equipped main kitchen.A door from the living room leads to Unit B, entering a little hallway with doors leading to the two bedrooms (1 double & 1 twin) and the second shower room. The double room has it’s own external entrance, which opens out onto a covered, furnished terrace with kitchen equipped with 4-ring hob and fridge freezer. To be able to cook and eat al fresco is a dream and a real added bonus.

Unit C is around the other side of the villa, with it’s own entrance, and is added when the villa is booked for 6to 8, or for those who prefer three bedrooms and three shower rooms. It consists of a spacious double bedroom, with sofa, a shower room and a covered, furnished terrace outside with kitchen, equipped with 4-ring hob and fridge freezer. As there is no connecting door between this and the other units it is not ideal for small children, however it is perfect for teenagers, couples or grand parents who would appreciate a little extra privacy and the independence of their own cooking facilities.
