Nature has carved out a secret corner of paradise and this is it! Peaceful, romantic and a perfect place to forget the daily grind.

Less than half an hour from Lecce and just over 20 minutes from Otranto, Borgo Naturalis is perfectly placed for exploring Puglia’s Salento. The beautiful beaches at Torre Sant’Andrea are only about 15km, as well as the famous Stacks of Torre Sant’Andrea, where the coastline becomes cliffy, with spectacular rocky outcrops in the crystalline turquoise sea.

Martano is less than 3km away and is a charmingly unassuming small town, with a mediaeval castle, Cistercian monastery, churches, palazzi and piazzas. Proud of its original Greek identity, it is one of the recognised Griko community of Salento towns, which is determined to preserve its heritage, language and culture. Of course, over the centuries, the Greek has combined with Italian to create a fascinating fusion of cultures, rich in folklore, poetry, music, typically Pugliese lifestyle and Greek-sounding dialect.

Borgo Naturalis, an eighteenth century hamlet or borgo, is now a “Bioresort”, a small boutique agritourist hotel, which capitalises on nature and organics. Its setting is unique, a rural landscape with fields of lavender, rosemary, aloe, vines, citrus and olive trees. Its 13 hectares of farmland are farmed to produce a huge range of organic cosmetics, which are supplied all over the world. Domenico, the owner, loves his cosmetics business, but Borgo Naturalis is his real passion and he is extremely proud of his creation – and so he should be. It’s wonderful.

Ancient blends effortlessly with modern facilities. Pale terracotta walls, paintwork lightly washed with grey and green, masses of local stone on floors and walls – all paint a sublime picture of rustic luxury. All eight deluxe rooms and junior suites are ground floor, in two terraces of what were once the estate workers’ houses. Nowadays, couples have the luxury of a spacious double room, but, in times gone by, these housed whole families. Each room leads directly out onto its own part of the terrace, a perfect place for alfresco relaxing. The furnishings are mostly antique with iron and brass beds and wooden furniture showing the lovely patina of age. Needless to say, the organic toiletries in the shower rooms are as home-grown as you can get and fabulous for the skin.

The gardens, lawns and terraces are sheer delight. The pool is magnificent. The intimate spa is a dream. Reserved only for you when you book it, the water circuit, emotional shower, plunge pool with jacuzzi and steam room make it the perfect place to while away the time and wash away every trace of the daily grind – a place where the body and the soul can relax. The spa is Anna’s kingdom and she is an expert at the “four elements” treatments she also offers. Your biggest problem will be that you never want to leave it!

Everything is done with nature in mind. Not only does Borgo Naturalis bombard your senses with nature’s perfumes and colours, but it also serves up the traditional Salento and Southern Italian cuisine. The food and wine are excellent, from the delicate breakfasts to the more elaborate four-course dinners. Exquisitely flavoursome, the traditional recipes, local ingredients and home-grown produce combine to present unforgettable meals.

We think that it is the atmosphere, which will stay with you long after your visit though. Borgo Naturalis has such a relaxing tranquillity, a huge personality and a very special welcome. Domenico has chosen an amazing team of staff who share his passion for Borgo Naturalis. Luigi, the Manager, is a consummate professional and we have known him for decades so, sure enough, we know that he only has the best. Roberto, the chef, Peppino, Martina, Angelica and Paola cannot do enough for their guests.

What are the first things that leap into our mind when we think of Borgo Naturalis? Peace and tranquillity, utter relaxation, a place to be cosseted, a place with so much personality, understated exclusivity and luxury – we would go there at the drop of a hat – tomorrow even! Please!

The room was lovely, great size deluxe room, bathroom was also a good size with changing lights in the shower. They even had eucalyptus oil on the pillows to help you sleep, not that this was needed as the bed was very comfy!! Rachel & Ian, Bristol
