A pretty and modern designer boutique agritourism, with an amazing location and views, run by an absolutely charming brother and sister. Enjoythe vibrant colours with natural stone and the really beautiful gardens. Splendid!

Only about 20 minutes to sandy beaches and less than that to Paestum’s magnificent Ancient Greek temples, Borgo La Pietraia seems a world away from everything. Backed by the craggy mountains of the Cilento National Park and sitting at the top of a hill, high above the plain of Paestum, it would be difficult to find a more impressive view. The sea sparkles in the distance and the vista opens out into a gloriously wide, open panorama, which quite takes your breath away.

A local builder, born in Capaccio village, and his architect friend, who lectures at Naples University, had a dream. They wanted to take a slice of their beloved countryside and build something hidden into the hillside, with stunning views, lots of character and stylish accommodation. They succeeded! Borgo La Pietraia’s low buildings are made of local natural stone and they curve into the hill, only occasionally attracting your eye with a wonderful splash of colour. They got it absolutely right and they have created a lovely small boutique agriturismo.

Rooms are housed in short, one-storey, curving terraces and the Junior Suites are our favourites. In places, a chintzy country house feel blends with a high standard, more minimalist, modern designer style. The resulting effect is not luxurious, but supremely comfortable, with characterful and stylish elegance. Most rooms have sea-facing terraces and floor to ceiling glass doors to capitalise on the vista – that blue sparkling ribbon of sea on the horizon is inescapable, it seems. From almost everywhere, you get at least a glimpse of the sea and the breakfast and dining terrace, just below the Junior Suites, makes the most of the amazing views. The breakfast-cum-dining-room is a total culmination of all of the hues used elsewhere – blue walls, and chairs in joyfully bright primary colours. The restaurant is usually open in all but low season and guests choose dinner from a set menu given at breakfast or sometimes there is a fixed menu.

The pool sits on an elevated terrace behind and above the main building and has uninterrupted spectacular views. The grounds are a dream, beautifully landscaped with lavender, roses, Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants and majestic olive trees. There is even a jogging path around the garden – just in case you get bored of utter relaxation!!

The gentle Arianna and her brother, Antonio, are charm personified. They cannot do enough to help their guests enjoy their stay. Antonio and his family have their detached house at Borgo La Pietraia. Arianna seems to be there most of the time, too, with her adorable puppy, Cookie.

Review

The hotel is in a beautiful location, the buildings blending harmoniously with the environment, the furnishings are stylish, the food is great the owners are exquisite. – Elizabeth, Edingburgh

This small Farmhouse could be worth staying here for the view alone. Set up a hill in lovely gardens overlooking the Almalfi Peninsula and Capri with dramatic sunsets as well – wow. – Sue & Derek, Carlisle

As there are few rooms Borgo La Petraia, we felt like in a hotel suite with our own pool. The view from the pool is simply amazing and the food and drinks are brought to the pool. The food, both at breakfast and during the evening meal was plentiful and tasty. I recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a quiet holiday in the Italian sky. – Britt, Lincolnshire

Rooms

Borgo La Pietraia has only 12 rooms. Housed in short, one-storey, curving terraces, a chintzy country house feel blends with a high standard, more minimalist, modern designer style. The resulting effect is not luxurious, but supremely comfortable, with characterful and stylish elegance.

Most rooms have sea-facing terraces and floor to ceiling glass doors to capitalise on the vista – that blue sparkling ribbon of sea on the horizon is inescapable, it seems, although some room types have a better view of the sea than others, which is partly why we prefer the Junior Suites. All of the rooms are good though.

JUNIOR SUITE
Thankfully, there are more Junior Suites at Borgo La Pietraia than any other type of room, because we really like these en-suite bedrooms very much and think that they are well worth the extra cost. Closer to the breakfast/dining terrace and set well back in the grounds, they are larger than the Superior rooms and feel considerably more spacious, with great shower rooms and generous showers. Of all the rooms, they have the best front sea-view, over the gardens, and the massive floor to ceiling glass doors make the most of it. They have a fabulous terrace with table and chairs and each one is separated from the next by a screen of plants or cane – what a superb spot to watch the sun set over the sparkling sea!

SUPERIOR ROOM
The four Superior Rooms are smaller than Junior Suites, with slightly smaller showers. Two of the four have no real sea-view and the other two have a partial sea-view through trees. Set less well back in the grounds and farthest from the breakfast/dining areas, they are nearer the boundary. They have a terrace with table and chairs and each one is separated from the next by a screen of plants or cane. These rooms are perfectly good rooms and guests love them – we just think that the view of the sea should not be missed at Borgo La Pietraia.

SUITE
Borgo La Pietraia’s Suite is very large and comfortable, with a seating area in the bedroom. The shower room is even more fabulous than those in the Junior Suites. Like the Superior Rooms it is set less well back in the grounds and farthest from the breakfast/dining areas, so it is nearer the boundary of the property. The largest terrace of all, it is splendid and has sea-views, table and chairs and two armchairs.
