Modern design meets traditional Sicilian. Stay in a wonderful little borgo, cobbled streets threading between honey-coloured stone terraces, pretty courtyards, a fabulous pool and oodles of space. Boutique designer apartments with style.

About 40km from Palermo airport and 60km from Trapani airport, Borgo Degli Angeli could not be better situated for convenience of travel. In the largely undiscovered and incredibly interesting western part of Sicily, it was sheer joy to find such an enchanting group of apartments. Castellammare Del Golfo is about 20km away, Segesta is only 25km, the fascinating towns of Alcamo and Terrasini are within half an hour’s drive, and within about an hour you can drive to the centre of Palermo, Erice, Piana Degli Albanesi or Corleone. Within about a quarter of an hour you can be on one of the glorious sandy beaches in the Gulf of Castellammare, or sitting in a seafront bar or in the piazza of Balestrate, munching away at your typically Sicilian granita in a brioche, watching the world go by.

Borgo Degli Angeli is a unique and intriguing place to stay and was once part of the estate of the Sicilian aristocratic family of the Polizzis. The Polizzi family was an important noble family, in the 14th century and onwards, whose members held several political and military roles during the Aragon domination of Sicily. One of its lineage was a prefect of the Aragon family, while others were Knights of Malta, such as Antonio Polizzi, a royal soldier, appointed by Ferdinand II of Aragon. Eventually, Baron Polizzi died without leaving any heirs and, for a time, the Polizzi estate was managed by the Baron’s sister, who was a nun. Later, it was administered by the diocese of Monreale.

The current owner, Giuseppe Bologna, quite simply fell in love with the place. He adored its mediaeval architecture and determined to restore it to its former glory. The grand Polizzi summer villa and farmhouse is nearby and Borgo Degli Angeli is the typically Sicilian borgo or hamlet, where the peasants and workers lived and worked. Due to the robustness of the honey-hued, golden stone, used in its original construction, Giuseppe found it surprisingly well-preserved and intact, in places, but his restoration project was a massive undertaking and it could not have been more successfully executed.

A tiny street of cobbles and flagstones runs down the middle of Borgo Degli Angeli’s two separate structures, which look like terraces, either side of the narrow street. On one side, were the huge grain stores, the olive press and the immensely proportioned warehouses, where olive oil and wine were stored. These are now the banqueting halls. On the other side, were the little peasant houses, with an Arab-influenced baglio or courtyard, at their heart. These are now the apartments and stunning lounges for apartment guests. Go through the imposing archway, into the baglio, which is open to the vivid blue Sicilian sky, and, behind soaring stone walls on all sides, you enter a magical space.

Giuseppe did not over-restore Baglio Degli Angeli into oblivion. On the contrary, you feel that you are amidst history, feeling it and walking in the steps of those in the past. The uneven, stone flagstones of the baglio are softened by the grass, allowed to grow between them. Splashes of vibrant colour and twirly-whirly ironwork beautifully interrupt what could so easily have been the harshness of so much stone, even though it is delightfully mellow and golden. A boutique designer stylishness compliments the traditional Sicilian. He’s done a great job and we love it.

Borgo Degli Angeli’s traditional stone buildings are stunning and guests feel a real sense of community. The 9 apartments (and 2 “honeymoon suites”) have been created with comfort in mind. Boutique, designer stylishness mixed with a modern rustic-chic, well equipped fitted kitchens and some very attractive shower/bathrooms make them pretty special. Most of the apartments are accessed from the communal baglio, which is a particularly attractive space, used by all for relaxing and especially wonderful in the evening to sit and enjoy an aperitivo or two. In fact, Borgo Degli Angeli is incredibly generous with space for its apartment guests. The elegant lounges, on two floors, are very welcoming, with large comfy sofas. There is a purpose-built play area for kiddies, around the back and well away from the baglio – a child’s dream. Near to it is the communal laundry room.

Apart from all of that, at the end of the street, just across the lane, impressive gates lead to another piece of paradise. The pool sits in its own lush pretty garden, on an open terrace. Lofty palms and colourful Mediterranean flowers and shrubs form the backdrop to a spectacular pool and terraces, with a lovely modern gazebo for shade and intriguingly sculptural pots and lights. In the evening, with the whole area illuminated, it is extraordinary. Goodness – Borgo Degli Angeli has style!

Originally conceived as a venue for weddings, Borgo Degli Angeli still hosts some wonderfully elegant and sophisticated weddings nowadays. The venue can cater for up to 550 guests, so, as you might imagine, they can be pretty spectacular events. However, Giuseppe, the owner, soon discovered that the borgo could not be all things to all mortals. He built a brand new wedding venue, with its own pool, much further down in the grounds, out of sight of Borgo Degli Angeli’s “corpo centrale”, where the apartments are located. When we stayed there, apparently there had been a lively reception for 300 guests that night and we didn’t see or hear a thing! There are weddings almost every day in this new part of the borgo. As Borgo Degli Angeli is so beautiful, there is considerable demand for it as a venue, so there are also some weddings in the main corpo centrale (usually Fridays and Saturdays), when the huge stone former grain barn, on one side of the little cobbled street, is used as a restaurant and wedding guests have aperitifs around the main pool. On such occasions, the pool will be unavailable for apartment guests after about six o’clock in the evening. In theory, no wedding guests are ever allowed into the guests’ courtyard, other than the bride and groom, for a few photos. However, this is Sicily and we know how “flexible” Sicilians can be! On these occasions though, as an appreciation for guests’ understanding, apartment guests are offered a complimentary buffet, so that they can enjoy some of the same delicious food as the wedding guests – that sounds like a great deal to us!

So, can we promise no intrusion? No. Should that stop you going? No, absolutely not. We would actually try to be there when there is a wedding, just to observe it, if we could gate-crash unseen into a little corner. You’ve seen the wedding scenes in “The Godfather”? See how a real Sicilian wedding is done – Marlon Brando and Don Corleone, eat your hearts out!

We think that this “little town of angels” will capture your hearts, as it has ours, and nothing will matter. It’s heavenly!
